What are the cards worth in Crazy Eights? ›

Cards 2 through 9 (except the 8) are worth their face value Aces are worth 1 point Cards 10 through King are worth 10 points 8s are worth 50 points. Once a player reaches 100 points or above, the player with the lowest number of points wins the game.

The Play Starting to the dealer's left, each player must place one card face up on the starter pile. Each card played (other than an eight) must match the card showing on the starter pile, either in suit or in denomination. Example: If the Q of Clubs is the starter, any club may be played on it or any Queen.

Basic play

Some players may agree to the "Dealer's Goodies" rule, in which the dealer is permitted to take the first discarded card if it is a "special" card, (i.e. an Ace, 2, 4, 8, or Q♠) and continue taking cards until an "ordinary" card surfaces.

In the standard game of Crazy 8, the Jack doesn't have any special significance. In some variations of the game, the Jack is used as a “Skip” card and the next players turn is skipped when played. In this variation, the Jack isn't “wild” like an 8 (which can be played on top of any card).

The player with the fewest points (not necessarily cards) in their hand wins. Aces are worth 1 point. Numbered cards are worth the same amount as their number of pips. Court cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points apiece. 8s really are crazy with a value of 50 points!

The game first appeared as Eights in the 1930s, and the name Crazy Eights dates to the 1940s, derived from the United States military designation for discharge of mentally unstable soldiers, Section 8. It may have derived from the German game of Mau-Mau.

What does an ace mean in Crazy Eights? ›

If a skip card (Ace) is played, the following player is not allowed to take any action. Their turn is skipped and the player after them continues. Alternatively, the player may play a skip card themselves and pass on the effect. If a player cannot play, they must pick up a card from the deck.

When a 2 or a Joker is played, the following player must draw two or four cards accordingly. Alternatively, they can play a draw card of the same rank, but regardless of suit, and pass the draw obligation on to the next player. Note: The 2 and the Joker cannot be combined.

If you have a hand full of spades, play the high one and stay in the suit. If you have a hand full of clubs, play your five of clubs to switch to a better suit. Generally speaking, if matching the suit when you play your card, you want to play your higher cards first.

Crazy Eights rules last card rule

Just like in Uno you have to declare that you only have one card left on your hand when this is the case. You do this by saying “last card” and if you fail to do so you must draw two cards from the draw pile as a penalty.

Playing off pairs

The ability to play off pairs is what makes Crazy Pairs fun and challenging. After a player plays a card, either by matching the suit or rank of the top card on the pile, if he has one or more cards of the same rank as the one he played he can play those cards as well. This is called a pair.
